3berg Privat Chat is a messenger for private conversations. You can chat, create groups, make calls and send files, all end-to-end encrypted and without a phone number. It is 3berg’s only product, made for everyday private life.

One-to-one and group chats, voice and video calls, sending files, photos and voice messages, backups for switching devices, and a desktop version. All of it is end-to-end encrypted.

A message is encrypted on the device it is written on and only made readable again on the recipient’s device. On its way through the network and on the provider’s servers, it is nothing but gibberish.

To make this work, everyone has two keys. Anyone may know the public one; the private one stays on your own device. Without it, the message cannot be read, not even by the provider.

Yes. Messages, calls and files are encrypted on your device and only decrypted on the device of the person you are talking to. Not even we can read them. More under Security & privacy.

HTTPS protects the route between your device and a server. At the server, the data arrives readable again. End-to-end encryption, on the other hand, protects the content along the entire way. The server never sees it in plain text.

So the padlock in your browser only shows that the connection to the website is protected. It tells you nothing about whether a chat is encrypted.

Imagine someone steals a key today. With forward secrecy, they still cannot use it to decrypt conversations they recorded earlier. To achieve this, the devices regularly negotiate new, short-lived keys and throw the old ones away.

Encryption only helps if you really are encrypting with the right key. If someone could slip in between unnoticed, they could pose as the person you are talking to (a so-called man-in-the-middle attack).

In 3berg, you do this with a QR code. Scan each other’s codes when you meet, and you can be sure no one is sitting in between.

Yes. Independent experts have examined the app for security vulnerabilities.

Yes. The source code is publicly available, so experts can check for themselves how 3berg works.

No. Every chat app is only as secure as the device it runs on. Keep your operating system up to date, only install apps from trustworthy sources, lock your device with a good passcode, and use different passwords for important accounts.

Metadata is everything except the content itself: who writes to whom, when and how often. Without reading a single word, you can work out circles of friends, daily routines and habits from it.

Good privacy therefore means creating as little metadata as possible and keeping it for as short a time as possible.

No. You can use 3berg without a phone number. You only switch on matching with your address book if you want to. Otherwise, you simply add contacts by QR code.

On our servers, only until they have been delivered. Then we delete them. On your device, your chats remain stored in encrypted form for as long as you keep them.

With the backup feature of 3berg Privat Chat. It lets you move securely to a new device, chats and all.

No. That’s why we don’t ask for your consent either – there would be nothing to consent to. Fonts, images and scripts all come from 3berg.app itself.

Only the fields you fill in (name optional, email address, topic, message) and the time of receipt are stored. The form does not store your IP address. Details are in the privacy notice.
